Chomping at the bit.......

I'm getting restless sitting around on my backside, so the other day I attempted to do a little light modelling. Had all gone to plan then 7416 would now be complete, after all I only needed to assemble, and fit a pair of screwlink couplings, paint the Modelu crew and complete the weathering. Alas I found it rather uncomfortable to sit at my workbench, so I had to settle for a short running, and photo session instead.

Like the prototype 7416 will be used mainly on the pick up goods, and here she is collecting an empty wagon from the yard.  I'm rather pleased with how this loco has turned out, and along with 1455 she will provide the main motive power on the branch, much in the same way as the two prototypes did on the Presteign branch

Its getting difficult to come up with new angles for photos now, and I suppose that is one of the problems with such a small layout.  Perhaps that is why I'm actually looking forward to dismantling things and starting afresh. But then again I'm a builder rather than operator and take great pleasure from seeing a bare baseboard being transformed into a model railway, as trackwork slowly appears, and the scenery begins to take shape. Then of course there is the thrill of powering up the new track for the first time, and watching a loco run along it, especially if you've built everything yourself.  But enough lets return to Llangunllo and follow the path of the pick up goods.

When shunting is taking place, any goods trains are usually stabled on the dairy siding, unless some milk tanks need delivering or collecting.  In which case they are left on the main running line under the protection of signals and the watchful eye of the 'Bobby'.  The 20T brake is a much modified Airfix model which first saw light of day on Penhydd, whilst the 12T van and 5 plank open are much older, both being built from Ratio kits many years ago.  All three have rocking 'W' irons, not that I bother with such things today, as compensated goods stock isn't needed in EM.  Well not if your baseboards are level, and care has been taken during track laying.
Despite searching far and wide I have only come across one photo showing a 74XX pannier with a single coach passenger train on the Presteign branch in BR days.  I would love to be able to share it with you here but copyright issues prevent me from doing so.  The engine still has its number painted on the front buffer beam, but I can't quiet make it out as one of the buffers is in the way.  And, its still to receive its smokebox door number plate, so no luck on that score, I think she will be either 7414 or 7416 but it would be nice to know for certain.

Of course there is nothing to stop me from posting a photo of 7416 with a single coach leaving Llangunllo.  I'm not a fan of helicopter views but they do have their uses, the width of the baseboard here, from backscene to front facia is 18" or a little over 45 cm if you've gone metric.

Between now and Easter I expect to start dismantling Llangunllo, and its replacement should be up and running in basic form around this time next year.  But I'm not setting any deadlines as railway modelling is my hobby, and is something to be enjoyed as the mood takes me.  All the components and raw materials are now to hand for Llangunllo Mk 2, so it will soon be time to strip back the old layout, modify the baseboard frames and start again.  Another batch of photos will be taken prior to, and during the dismantling process, and then Llangunllo as you know it, will like Penhydd before it pass into history.
